Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, Interactive Costume Display Cases, 2001
Famous for its Arts and Crafts Movement Collection, the museum wanted to improve its display of 18th and 19th century costume accessories. These exhibits, being delicate, need to be kept in controlled conditions and out of continuous light, hence the requirement for an interactive case. Visitors need to be encouraged to explore and open the doors and drawers. The cabinets were designed around human proportions with hats at the top to shoes at the bottom. In the museum, when the cases are walked past a light is triggered, illuminating the hats - on opening the doors the hats rotate.
