St. James Church, Cruden Bay, Aberdeen, 2009

Commissioned after an extensive refurbishment of the historic St James Church - the brief was to replace the much loved but heavy existing Pews with something lighter to enable greater versatility of the space. Committed to the idea of six seater pews, the idea was to create a contemporary long pew that reflects the strong heritage of the church but can be easily moved.

Echoing the traditional pew, the design has sculpted ends which form a half arm, giving a sense of enclosure and ecclesiastical feel to the design. Continuation of the armrests forms both the kneeler and prayerbook shelves. Both the backrest and the seat are curved to give the pews an unexpected level of comfort.

The pews are manufactured out of native oak, and finished in clear lacquer for easy maintenance.
